Their cultures might be difficult to decipher, as human culture and language from a different part of the world might be.
We choose to turn a blind eye to suffering, we choose archaic tradition over our better knowledge, we choose inaction over our better judgement.
We can change our conditioning. We no longer have the excuse of ignorance. Unless we turn away, we can see their suffering.
Ending it is simple - we treat them as we would each other, by accepting that they have rights to life, as we do.
We have changed in the past. Our predecessors fought for the freedom of slaves, for the right of women to be considered people, for the end of holocausts and genocides. Here I was, thinking of myself as environmentally conscious, while I stood as the face of a company which was proudly serving the corpses of sentient, living, loving, thinking, hoping, and fearing animals to its guests. That was considered to be normal.
It was time for me to change normal. I would no longer support what I knew to be wrong. Knowing the right path, we have a responsibility to follow it. I knew I could lessen the suffering and pain of other living beings by making a small change in my life. Knowing I was a part of something deeply wrong with the world, I made a choice to no longer be a part of it.
In my work, I've always tried to lead by example. It was time to set an example and stop personally profiting from the needless suffering and death of beings I've always claimed to love. It was time to align my actions with my values.
Free yourself from the shackles of your conditioning and see the vastness of life around you. Now, see it hurt. Now, do something about it.
Every action we take, every decision we make, shapes the world around us. Choose a better world. Try a vegan lifestyle - healthier, more affordable, and void of unnecessary death.
