Very informative post from   @functiontionalfertility     #pcosawarenessmonth   Posted   @withrepost   •   @functionalfertility   I learned about sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) as a school bus. Your estrogen and testosterone are like wild children running around, and it’s chaotic. Once they are on the bus, there are less children running around. But if the bus never shows up, there are children everywhere and you’re in trouble. . We can use the short version, SHBG, because we’re all friends here. SHBG acts as a carrier to control how much free (active) hormone is circulating in our blood. MOST of the testosterone and estrogen in circulation is actually bound to SHBG (ahem, they’re on the bus). The more SHBG we have, the less active hormone is available, and the opposite is also true. When all is well, this keeps hormones at an ideal level. . Now, testosterone and insulin tend to be elevated in PCOS (check the last few PCOS posts for the deets), and both decrease SHBG. This leads to more free testosterone and estrogen (contributing to the estrogen dominance we talked about in the last   #hormonehighlight  ). The plot thickens! . A large study from last year showed that women who have PCOS and low SHBG levels are more likely to have signs of elevated testosterone (like facial hair growth), diabetes, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, obesity, infertility, and cardiovascular diseases. However, they ALSO reported that therapies like myo-inositol and metformin could increase SHBG and improve hormonal profiles. . Here are some additional functional medicine strategies for increasing SHBG: ◾️A low fat vegetarian diet is the most supported in the literature for increasing SHBG ◾️Lignan rich foods, particularly flax seeds ◾️Low glycemic, fiber rich foods (in order to manage insulin) ◾️Treating hypothyroidism can improve SHBG ◾️Resveratrol is an emerging consideration to increase SHBG production in the liver . Have you always had weird periods and had to take birth control to deal? Statistics say that it could be PCOS (the most common cause of female infertility). When we talk to patients who think they have PCOS, or when we diagnose it for them, we take them through all of the puzzle pieces. We explain that what you eat is THE most important predictor of how your hormones work. Ugh, stoopid weight gain. I know I'm supposed to be ok with whatever size my body is, but it's hard, y'all. I don't want to gain any more weight, not from a vanity point of view, but from a physical one. I don't want to struggle to lean forward to tie my shoes up. Also, the heavier I am, the more severe my fibromyalgia gets. Is anyone else really struggling with loving themselves as they are, and trying to remain healthy and comfortable?         #pcos     #polycysticovaries     #ohmyovaries     #womenshealth     #gynae     #PCOS     #pcosawareness     #pcoscysters     #pcoslife     #pcossupport     #pcoscommunity     #pcoscyster     #pcoshelp     #pcoslifestyle     #pcosfriendly     #pcosproblems     #pcosuk     #pcospositivity      #Bodypositivity     #bodypositive     #comfortableinyourskin     #morethanareflection     #bopo      #dietculture     #dietculturedropout     #dietcultureexists

A “sacrifice” is a deposit to a future abundant blessing 💥⁣ ⁣ Those words hit me something fierce today. When I pursued my passion to share my health to build a business in virtual coaching four years ago, I chose to “sacrifice” missing out on my favorite TV shows, staying up late, sleep ins on the weekends, and so on. My   #pcosfriendly   lunch today: Broccoli, cauliflower, baby carrots pulav with basmati rice (1 cup) Mixed pickle (great source of probiotics) Side salad of lettuce, cucumber and carrots, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and seasoned with salt, pepper and lemon juice. Roasted urad dal papad/popadam. . . We were out till 2:30 pm to hunt for good side tables for the guest room and dressers for other rooms so I had to think of something quick and easy to serve for lunch. When in doubt always go for a simple pulav 😄. . . .   #pcos     #pcosdiet     #pcosawarenessmonth     #pcosfighter     #pcoswarrior     #pcossupport     #pcoslifestyle     #pcosjourney     #pcosfood     #pcosfooddiary     #pcosfooduk     #kinusfoodlife     #indianpcosdiet     #indianpcosfighter     #indianpcos     #indianpcosdiets     #indianpcosdietplan     #indianpcosthyroiddietplan     #indianpcoslife     #indianpcosfood     #indianpcoscommunity     #indianpcoscysters
