💪🏼 WEIGHTLIFTING and OVERALL HEALTH!!! So excited to share this research, been wanting to for ages. . . We continue to grow and naturally grow muscle till about our mid 20s. As we age we lose muscle mass in a process called sarcopenia (some studies show maintenance/even loss from age 30). This mass is generally replaced with fat. This can lead to frailty, decreased metabolism, loss of aerobic capacity and lack of durability as we grow older. This could be due to several factors, one of which is age related insulin resistance. Insulin reduces protein breakdown so when resistance develops, muscle breakdown increases. This means it’s super important to build muscle when you are young and work to maintain it as we age (it can be done!!!). A study at USC looked at masters level athletes and noted that while they demonstrate age matched levels of sarcopenia, their fitness and reserve muscle is that of people 20 years younger than them!!! These athletes have likely exercised for a long time but it is never too late to start getting strong. . . So if you are only doing cardio, you can run away your muscle mass (I did this) which makes it hard to build back (it has been). Cardio is great for you heart and lungs but it is so important to maintain muscles as well and weightlifting is fun and has serious benefits throughout life. So why not run/bike to the gym then lift some weights 💪🏼 Start slow if you haven’t lifted before, using dumbbells and body weight. You know those days when you get to the gym and before your first warm-up set is even over, you can already tell it’s going to be a shitty workout? Today was one of those. . I’m the type of person where the quality of my workout and the way I feel leaving the gym pretty much determines the outcome of the rest of my day. It sounds petty but if you really live for this shit, you understand. . Perfectionism is an understatement. It’s just the way I’m wired - constantly at war with myself - every day striving to be better than I was the day before. It took a long time for me to learn that just because I can’t see or feel the progression today, that doesn’t automatically mean I’m going backward. . So to highlight (according to me) the only acceptable portion of my training today, here’s a little arm finisher • 3-4 heavier sets decline curls, 5-8 reps • 3-4 moderate sets seated hammer curls 15-20 reps . I never give arms their own day unless I need a plateau breaker. I only train biceps or triceps individually and at the end of a back or chest/shoulder workout. 6-8 sets max. I’m a big proponent of attacking a muscle group as quickly as possible, getting in and getting out, especially with the small ones. . A shorter workout/more intense stimulation + quicker recovery = the ability to train them more frequently = more growth.
